Seed Bank Singapore

Background

Seed Bank Singapore is the nation’s first dedicated seed bank, designed and built by AlfaTech Asia to support biodiversity conservation. The facility houses laboratories, seed processing rooms, and specialized storage with a capacity for 25,000 plant species. Located in a conserved colonial heritage building at 1D Cluny Road, within the Singapore Botanic Gardens, the project balances modern functionality with historical preservation. In 2020, it was awarded the Singapore Good Design (SG Mark) under the category of Sustainable Design.

Project Highlights

AlfaTech Asia delivered a full design-and-build solution that combined architectural aesthetics with advanced engineering. The facility includes laboratories dedicated to seed cleaning, preservation, germination, and cryogenic storage, as well as a dry and cold room with strict environmental controls for long-term genetic conservation. This sustainable design enables the storage and research of some of the world’s most valuable plant species, ensuring Singapore’s contribution to global biodiversity efforts.
